Everything In Between
Dr JJ’s Everything In Between
For Dr JJ ‘Everything in Between’ often has to do with physical activity, games, and promoting health! For other people it can include many different things. Ultimately, it refers to everything in between The Universe (the world around us, including the furthest things away!) and The Mind (the closest things within us). It’s the things that you are passionate about and that you love doing. For Dr JJ this includes working in psychiatry because he gets to promote healthy lifestyles and help people to improve their health.
Promoting health, physical activity, and games are just some of the important elements of Dr JJs ‘Everything in Between’. He also remains passionate about astrophysics, astronomy, and science in general. Relationships with family and people close to him are also important, just as they are for many people. What are the things that you are passionate about? If you’re not sure, then it’s a good time to figure it out!
Smoke Stroke & Promoting Health
Dr JJ is passionate about this topic because smoking has one of the largest impacts on mental and physical health. Secondhand smoke alone kills 1.2 million people per year. Children’s health is highly impacted by parents’ tobacco smoke. The risks of secondhand smoke are almost identical to smoking cigarettes. For mental health this includes risks of anxiety, suicide, aggression, and depression. In fact, quitting smoking has benefits for depression and anxiety that are as significant as taking an antidepressant. For more information about how secondhand smoke affects your mental health check out this blog from Smoke Stroke.
Physical Activity & Sport
After smoking, sedentary behaviour is one the biggest health risk factors. Obesity is on the rise worldwide and it’s because people are eating less healthy diets while becoming less active. Dr JJ has been involved in competitive sports and regular physical activity his entire life. Beginning at age 3 he competed in football (soccer) until his late teens. He was also involved in many school teams including volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field, gymnastics and wrestling. In university he had the option to play basketball and soccer, but instead decided to compete in tennis and badminton, for which he received scholarships. In 2011 he started a hip hop dance club (Street Groove) at the University of Queensland, which is still thriving today. In recent years his badminton passion as been revived and he’s been training with some of the top Australian players. Otherwise, he spends time doing whichever activities are available, including weight training , running, and of course streetballing. If you’ve seen Hot Sauce and The Professor, then you know streetball. Ultimately, staying physically active is important for physical and mental health. For some people physical activity may be simply going for walks.
Speedcubing & Games
Not everybody can continue to be excessively physically active, but most people can keep their minds active with puzzles and games. Dr JJ first solved the Rubik’s cube (3×3 cube puzzle and best-selling toy) in 1990 using a basic method; his fastest time was about a minute. In recent years he has had a renewed passion and is taking part in speedcubing competitions. This involves solving the Rubik’s cube (and other similar puzzles) with advanced methods and with finger tricks. Currently Dr JJ’s fastest time for the Rubik’s cube is 9.03 seconds. He is also practicing 2×2, 4×4, and 5×5 puzzles (in speedcubing we write 3×3 rather than 3x3x3). Dr JJ thinks that speedcubing may be the ultimate mind-body game and sometimes even a type of mindfulness. At other times it’s a way to keep his mind (and hands) sharp and active, which is important for mental health and decreasing the risk of some diseases such as dementia.
